Frame types in this category

H-frame uprights are the large majority: two columns, a bed on pins between them, a ram on the head channel. Every Baileigh model whose listing names its frame - the HSP-10H, HSP-30A, HSP-30M-C, HSP-50A, HSP-66M-HD, HSP-75A and HSP-110M-HD - is called an H-frame press. The Norco line publishes the same layout in its dimensions - between uprights, between bed rails, bed on the head channel - as do both Ranger models, which give an inside width between rails without naming the frame type. Zinko notes its frames are open at the sides so long material can pass through. Mahle publishes throat specs rather than a frame type; the CSP-10 and CSP-10A are listed as the standing version with legs.

C-frame. The Baileigh CFP-70HD is the only dedicated C-frame here: 70 tons, fully welded and hydraulically operated, with adjustable slide pressure, two speed pressing and a separate control pedestal on 220 volt 3-phase power. Work table 27.5 in. x 23.625 in. x 1.75 in.; listed weight 8,180 lbs., which makes it the heaviest machine in this category.

Two-station presses. Baileigh pairs a main ram with a smaller second station on the HSP-30M-C (30 tons main, 10 tons side), HSP-60M-C (60 main, 24 side) and HSP-200M-C (200 main, 20 side). If you alternate heavy straightening with small bearing work, one frame does both.

Bench-top and specialty. The Mahle CBP-10 and CBP-10A are the 130 lb. bench versions of Mahle's 10 ton press, and per the listing can be bench mounted or bought with an integrated stand and safety gates. The Baileigh BP-3 is a 3 ton manual metal bench press, 12 in. throat depth, up to 3 in. of stroke, with a slug ejector and a floor stand on wheels. The Baileigh LP-48 is a 7 ton, 110 volt louver press with a 48 in. throat depth and a listed capacity of 16 ga mild steel.

How the press is powered

• Hand pump. Baileigh HSP-10H; Zinko ZSP-15S, with a gauge for direct pressure readings (online purchasing disabled); Norco 78013B and 78022E, whose Parkerized pump piston, ram and extension screw inhibit rust.
• Bottle jack. Ranger RP-20T, up to 40,000 lbs. through a 20-ton bottle jack. The RP-20HD instead uses a two-speed hydraulic pump with an integrated 4 in. 20-ton gauge.
• Air over hydraulic, hand backup. The Baileigh HSP-50A and HSP-75A run on shop air with a foot pedal and keep a manual hand pump on the side for fine control; the HSP-100A pairs its foot pedal with a hand-operated lever. The HSP-30A is pneumatic and its listing states you can work it manually for finer control, but publishes no foot pedal. The HSP-20A listing describes a hydraulic pneumatic press with a pressure regulator and gauge, and publishes neither a foot pedal nor a hand pump. The HSP-75A wants a 90 to 115 psi compressor.
• Air/hydraulic foot pump. Norco 78024, 78057A and 78077, hands free.
• Air/hydraulic, four-way mountable pump. Mahle CSP-75 and CSP-75K, listed at 120 to 200 psi required, with a winch cable for the bolster.
• Electro/hydraulic pump. Norco 78058A, 78078 and 78110C. The Zinko ZSP-10013RDE ships with a ZPE-45SVG-7L pump on a 110V input and a remote pendant, so the operator can stand clear (online purchasing disabled).
• Motor driven. Baileigh's M-series pairs a piston-style pump with a dedicated motor: 3 hp on 200-volt single-phase (HSP-30M, HSP-30M-C), then 5.3 hp, 7.5 hp, 10 hp and 14.75 hp on 220-volt 3-phase for the HSP-66M-HD, HSP-110M-HD, HSP-110M-1500-HD and HSP-176M-HD.

Capacity, and what each step up buys

The range covers 3, 7, 10, 12-1/2, 15, 20, 22, 25, 30, 50, 60, 66, 70, 75, 100, 110, 165 and 200 tons on the main ram, plus 10, 20 and 24 ton side stations on the two-station models. The 165 ton step is the HSP-176M-HD, whose listing conflicts with its own model number; see the note below. Reference points: 10 tons on the Baileigh HSP-10H, which publishes up to 10 tons and no pound figure, and on the four Mahle 10 ton models - CBP-10, CBP-10A, CSP-10 and CSP-10A - all listed at 20,000 lb; 25 tons on the Norco 78024 and on the Mahle CSP-25 and CSP-25A, which are the two listed at 50,000 lb; 100 tons on the Baileigh HSP-100A and the Norco 78110C. Baileigh's own HSP-50A listing calls the 50-ton upright the most popular H-frame in fabrication and machine shops, and that is where the Norco line is deepest.

20 ton shop presses

Three 20 ton machines are listed and they are not interchangeable. The Ranger RP-20T is compact: 40,000 lbs. from a bottle jack, 59 in. tall, 23 in. wide, 18 in. inside width between rails, 8 in. stroke, 211 lbs. shipping. The Ranger RP-20HD is the wider commercial frame: same 40,000 lbs., 60.25 in. x 37 in. on a 27.25 in. x 26 in. base, 24 in. between rails, table adjustable 7.5 in. to 36.25 in., 5.5 in. stroke, laterally moving cylinder, 274 lbs. The Baileigh HSP-20A is the air-assisted option: 19.25 in. working width, 7.5 in. stroke, pressure regulator and gauge, V-block set, 300 lbs. Longest stroke goes to the RP-20T, widest opening to the RP-20HD, and the HSP-20A if you have shop air.

Throat, stroke and bed travel: what will actually fit

Working width - the side-to-side opening - runs from 13.5 in. on the Baileigh HSP-10H to 59 in. on the HSP-110M-1500-HD, and Norco publishes it as throat width: 25 in. (78013B), 30 in. (78022E), 30.5 in. (78024), 34.5 in. (the 50 ton frames) and 40.25 in. (78110C). The Mahle CSP-75 lists a 50 in. throat width. Baileigh's motorized frames run 27.5 in. on the HSP-30M and HSP-30M-C, 40.94 in. on the HSP-66M-HD, 41.25 in. on the HSP-60M-C, 42.12 in. on the HSP-110M-HD, 43.3 in. on the HSP-176M-HD, 48 in. on the HSP-200M-C and up to 59 in. on the HSP-110M-1500-HD.

Throat depth, how far in from the front a part can sit, is published separately and on far fewer listings: 12 in. on the BP-3, 48 in. on the LP-48 louver press, and 8 in. inside / 14 in. outside on the Mahle CSP-75. Norco also publishes the gap between uprights, 5 in. to 6 in., and between bed rails, 6 in. to 9 in.

Stroke runs from up to 3 in. on the BP-3 to 13.75 in. on the HSP-110M-1500-HD. This is where the long-stroke Norco models earn their keep: the 78077 and 78078 give 13.25 in. of ram travel against 6.25 in. on their short-stroke twins, the 78057A (air/hydraulic) and the 78058A (electro/hydraulic). Same tonnage, same throat, more than double the travel. Mahle's 10 ton models list a 10 in. stroke, longer than the 6.3 in. on the 25 ton CSP-25.

Bed adjustment sets the usable throat height: 5 in. to 38.25 in. on the Norco 78013B, 6.75 in. to 40 in. on the 78024, 7.5 in. to 32.625 in. on the 50 ton frames and 18.25 in. to 45.75 in. on the 78110C. The 100 ton frame will not close below 18.25 in., so short parts need packing. Mahle uses a six-position bolster, with a 9.5 in. to 39.5 in. vertical throat on the CSP-75. Heavy beds need help moving: the Norco 50 and 100 ton presses use a hand operated winch, the Baileigh HSP-50A and HSP-75A a winch and pulley.

Lateral ram movement matters for off-center parts. Norco publishes it across the line, from the 12-1/2 ton 78013B up: the 78013B and 78022E mount the power unit on bearings for horizontal movement on the head channel, and the 78024 and every 50 and 100 ton frame move a self-retracting ram the same way. Zinko states it does not diminish capacity, and Mahle lists 32 in. of horizontal ram travel on the CSP-75. Baileigh claims it on most HSP models, but see the conflicting data below.

What you need on site

Power. Manual, bottle-jack and air-only presses need no electrical service. The Zinko ZSP-10013RDE pump and the Baileigh LP-48 run on 110 volt, the Baileigh HSP-30M and HSP-30M-C on 200-volt single-phase, and the CFP-70HD, HSP-66M-HD, HSP-110M-HD, HSP-110M-1500-HD, HSP-176M-HD and HSP-200M-C on 220-volt 3-phase. Without 3-phase at the panel, the air-operated HSP-100A still gives you 100 tons. Voltage is not published on the HSP-60M-C listing, which states only a 5.25 hp motor; ask for the model spec sheet before running conduit.

Air. The Baileigh HSP-75A calls for 90 to 115 psi and the Mahle CSP-75 and CSP-75K for 120 to 200 psi. Other air models publish no requirement, so check the spec sheet.

Floor and freight. Published overall heights run from 59 in. on the Ranger RP-20T to 85 in. on the Mahle CSP-75. Norco publishes footprints directly: 34 in. x 28 in. (78013B), 40 in. x 28 in. (78022E, 78024), 50 in. x 40 in. (50 ton frames) and 58 in. x 40 in. (78110C). Listed weights run from 130 lbs. on the Mahle CBP-10 to 8,180 lbs. on the CFP-70HD. Both Ranger listings state that unloading the freight is the buyer's responsibility, so arrange a forklift.

Certifications actually declared

What these listings actually declare: 37 of the 47 carry a California Proposition 65 warning, and the Baileigh HSP-110M-1500-HD states delivery in accordance with CE standards. The 78035 and 78070 press guards are listed as made in the USA. No listing here declares an ALI, ASME, ANSI or ETL certification; if your facility or insurer requires one, ask us and we will request it from the manufacturer. Manuals, spec sheets or flyers are attached to 28 of the 47 listings. Norco publishes the most - operations manual, product specifications, sales sheet and exploded drawing on its press pages - while several Baileigh models list no attached document at all; ask us and we will send the factory sheet.

Model comparison

Tooling, bed plates and guarding

What comes in the crate varies. Norco includes a pair of bed plates with the 78013B, 78022E and 78024, and Baileigh a V-block set with most HSP models. Zinko supplies the ZSP-15S with two bed plates and pump handles, and the ZSP-10013RDE with two bed plates, a jack handle and 2.5 in. and 10.5 in. ram extensions; both Zinko listings have online purchasing disabled. Ranger includes two press plates. The Mahle CSP-75K is the CSP-75 with the accessory kit included.

Sold separately: the Norco 78033 bed plates, a pair of steel plates with a V cutout on one edge and a circle cutout on the other, for 12-1/2, 22 and 25 ton presses only; the 78056A plates for 50 ton presses; and the 78111A for the 78110C. The 78025 and 78060 kits add pushing adapters, rams and a bearing puller for the 25 and 50 ton frames. The 78021 gauge reads psi and pounds of force at the ram end, accurate within +/- 2.5 percent.

Pressing stores energy and parts do fail. The Norco 78035 press guard is listed for the small 12.5, 22.5 and 25 ton presses; the 22 ton frame here is the 78022E, so confirm the fit with us before ordering. The 78070 covers the 50 ton presses. The 78048 press blanket is described as containing broken or flying parts, and Baileigh includes a rear safety cage with the HSP-30M. Most frames do not include guarding, so budget for it.

Where the published data conflicts

A few listings contradict themselves, and it is better to say so. On the Baileigh HSP-176M-HD the model number reads 176 while the description states 165 tons of force, and the spec table lists no tonnage. On the HSP-66M-HD the description says just over 1,750 pounds while its own spec table lists 2,360 lbs.; the table is the more reliable figure. The 78077 and 78078 spec tables repeat the shipping weights of the 78057A and 78058A (801 and 814 lbs.) while the store lists 833 and 846 lbs. for the long-stroke models; confirm the freight weight before you book the truck. The Mahle CSP-75 spec table has no weight row at all, while the store publishes 1,287 lbs. Several Baileigh listings show a Cylinder Movable row reading No while the bullets on the same page describe a cylinder that moves left and right in the frame, including the HSP-10H, HSP-100A and HSP-200M-C. And the Norco 78048 blanket is titled 24 in. x 36 in. while its feature line reads 26 in. x 36 in. Frequently asked questions

How many tons do I actually need?

Size it to the heaviest job you do regularly, not the one you did once. For car and light truck bearings, bushings, gears and U-joints, the 10 to 25 ton frames cover it: the Baileigh HSP-10H, the Norco 78013B, the 20 ton Ranger models or the 25 ton Norco 78024. Norco specifies its 50 and 100 ton presses for truck garages and industrial shops.

Air, electric or hand pump?

A hand pump needs no electrical service and never waits on a compressor, but every inch of ram travel is your arm. Air over hydraulic with a foot pedal keeps both hands on the part; confirm your compressor keeps up, since the HSP-75A wants 90 to 115 psi and the CSP-75 wants 120 to 200 psi. An electro/hydraulic pump needs no air line at all; Norco calls both its air/hydraulic and its electro/hydraulic foot pumps high speed, so pick by the service you have at the bay.

Two 50 ton Norco presses look identical. What is the difference?

Pump and stroke. The 78055A uses a manual two speed pump, the 78057A an air/hydraulic foot pump and the 78058A an electro/hydraulic pump, all with 6.25 in. of ram travel. The 78077 and 78078 are the long-stroke versions at 13.25 in. Frame dimensions are identical across all five.

Does the press come with bed plates and tooling?

Sometimes. Norco includes bed plates on the 78013B, 78022E and 78024 but lists them separately for the larger frames. Baileigh includes V-blocks on most HSP models and Ranger includes two press plates. Read the included list on the product page, and call 800-562-4791 to check sizing for your bay.
