Lanair XT-75: the small-shop and DIY-garage unit

The XT-75 listing describes a vertical cabinet "designed for fitting in corners," aimed at small shops and DIY garages. Its spec table is the most complete in this category:

• Heat range up to 75,000 BTU/h, heating area listed as up to 1,700 sq. ft.
• Fuel input 0.54 GPH
• Power supply 115 V, 60 Hz, 8 amps
• Cabinet dimensions (L x W x H) 26 in. x 21 in. x 75 in., described as a 21 in. W x 26 in. L floor-mounted footprint
• Hanging weight 210 lbs.
• Axial fan rated 500 CFM
• Chimney pipe 6 in. Class A; chimney location listed as top
• Ductable option: no
• Onboard air compressor, metering pump, draft gauge and a cleanable in-tank strainer, shipped preassembled

Two XT-75 listings exist, and they differ in the chimney they name: SKU 81010751 is the roof-chimney version at $4,299, SKU 81010752 the wall-chimney version at $5,199. Both XT-75 spec tables read 6 in. Class A pipe and Chimney Location: Top; the listings differ only in naming a roof chimney (81010751) versus a wall chimney (81010752) and do not publish what each version ships. Confirm the routing with us before cutting anything.

Lanair LS Pro Series: the 150,000 to 300,000 BTU/h shop units

The LS Pro Series covers the range most repair shops, fleet bays and truck shops shop for. Five models, each in two configurations:

• LS-150 - up to 150,000 BTU/h, 1.1 GPH, cabinet 22 in. x 22 in. x 70.2 in., not ductable
• LS-225 - up to 225,000 BTU/h, 1.6 GPH, cabinet 24 in. x 24 in. x 80.3 in., not ductable
• LS-225D - up to 225,000 BTU/h, 1.6 GPH, same 24 in. x 24 in. x 80.3 in. cabinet, ductable
• LS-300 - up to 300,000 BTU/h, 2.0 GPH, cabinet 26 in. x 26 in. x 85.2 in., not ductable
• LS-300D - up to 300,000 BTU/h, 2.0 GPH, same 26 in. x 26 in. x 85.2 in. cabinet, ductable

The XT-75 labels its dimensions L x W x H (26 in. x 21 in. x 75 in.) and states a 21 in. W x 26 in. L floor-mounted footprint. The LS tables give three unlabeled figures - 22 x 22 x 70.2 on the LS-150, 24 x 24 x 80.3 on the LS-225 and LS-225D, 26 x 26 x 85.2 on the LS-300 and LS-300D. Confirm which figure is width and which is depth before laying out the floor. Note also what the LS listings do not publish - unlike the XT-75, no square-foot heating area and no power supply rating. Heater only, or the complete Standard Thru-the-Roof Package?

This is the first real decision in the LS line, and the listings state it plainly: the heater-only SKUs are "for shops adding to an existing tank and chimney setup," and most installations are better served by the complete package.

A heater-only LS SKU ships the cabinet assembly, the burner assembly and the model's accessory kit - the LS-225 heater-only, for example, lists Assembly, Cabinet, Lanair 225; the LS-225/225D Accessory Kit; and the Assembly, LS-150/225 Burner. No tank, no chimney.

The Standard Thru-the-Roof Package adds the fuel storage and the flue. The LS-300 package parts list reads: Assembly, Cabinet, Lanair 300; LS-300/300D Accessory Kit; Assembly, LS-300/300D Burner; Tank 250G - LS; LS-250G Tank Mount/Plumbing; and LS 8IN Chimney Roof Kit.

The package premium is $2,075 on the LS-150 ($7,500 heater only against $9,575 packaged), the LS-225 and the LS-225D, and $2,175 on the LS-300 and LS-300D. That is what the tank, the mount and plumbing, and the chimney kit cost you.

Ductable or not: where the heat actually goes

Three of the five LS models push heat from the cabinet itself. The two "D" models - LS-225D (up to 225,000 BTU/h) and LS-300D (up to 300,000 BTU/h) - are listed as ductable, with a ductable blower fan design: "Ductable models allow heated air to be directed into targeted areas." The XT-75, LS-150, LS-225 and LS-300 are all listed as Ductable: No.

The practical read: one open bay with room for the cabinet in it, and a non-ductable model costs less - the LS-225 heater-only is $8,900 against $9,800 for the LS-225D, and the LS-300 package is $13,975 against $14,875 for the LS-300D. Heat that has to reach a parts room, a prep area or a second bay away from the cabinet is what the "D" models support.

Fuel burn and how long a 250-gallon tank lasts

Fuel input is published for every model and tells you how fast you go through your drain oil: 0.54 GPH on the XT-75, 1.1 GPH on the LS-150, 1.6 GPH on the LS-225 and LS-225D, 2.0 GPH on the LS-300 and LS-300D.

Against the 250-gallon tank that ships with every LS Standard Thru-the-Roof Package, and at the published fuel input, a full tank works out to about 227 hours on the LS-150, 156 on the LS-225 and LS-225D and 125 on the LS-300 and LS-300D. That is our own division of the published GPH ratings - Lanair publishes no run-time figure - and it assumes continuous full fire and a fully usable tank, so treat it as a planning aid rather than a spec. The XT-75 listings include no bulk tank; they describe a cleanable in-tank strainer on the unit itself.

What the installation requires

Only what the listings state is repeated here. The XT-75 pages link a manual and a spec sheet; the LS listings publish neither, so contact us for anything the LS spec tables do not cover.

• Ceiling height. All five LS packages state that the package is designed for ceilings up to 14 ft. and that you may need to add additional flue. The LS-225, LS-225D, LS-300 and LS-300D packages add: "For taller ceilings, contact our team for the right chimney configuration."
• Floor space. The XT-75 labels its dimensions L x W x H (26 in. x 21 in. x 75 in.) and states a 21 in. W x 26 in. L floor-mounted footprint. For the LS models the only figures published are the three unlabeled ones - 22 x 22 x 70.2 (LS-150), 24 x 24 x 80.3 (LS-225 and LS-225D), 26 x 26 x 85.2 (LS-300 and LS-300D) - so any footprint or height you read off them is read off figures the listings do not label.
• Chimney. The XT-75 specifies 6 in. Class A pipe. The LS-225, LS-225D, LS-300 and LS-300D packages list an LS 8IN Chimney Roof Kit. The LS-150 package lists a thru-the-roof chimney kit without publishing its diameter - confirm it before ordering pipe. A heater-only LS SKU ships no chimney at all.
• Electrical. The XT-75 lists 115 V, 60 Hz, 8 amps. The LS listings publish no power supply rating; contact us before planning the circuit.
• Air supply. The XT-75 lists an onboard air compressor. The LS listings do not state an air source - confirm the air supply requirement for either line with us before plumbing anything.
• Freight. Catalog shipping weights run from 320 lbs. (XT-75 roof chimney) to 1,040 lbs. (LS-300D package), so plan for forklift or lift-gate handling. All 12 listings here are flagged for free shipping.

Two weight discrepancies worth naming rather than hiding. The XT-75 spec table lists a hanging weight of 210 lbs. while its catalog shipping weights are 320 lbs. (roof chimney) and 332 lbs. (wall chimney) - different measurements, and the spec table is the one to rig from. And the LS package weights do not rise cleanly with output: the LS-300 package lists 995 lbs. against 1,020 lbs. for the LS-225D. Confirm the crated weight before booking a dock appointment.

Code, warranty and registration

None of the 12 listings publishes an ALI, ETL or UL certification mark, so no such claim is made here. The Lanair limited warranty attached to all 12 products does state terms that bear directly on how the unit must be installed:

• Coverage is one (1) year from the Effective Date - the date of purchase as established by the buyer, or otherwise the date of manufacture indicated by the serial number.
• The buyer must register the unit. No warranty claim examination begins until the unit is registered with the manufacturer.
• Installations "not in accordance with Manufacturer's Installation Manual, UL, NFPA guidelines, federal, state, and local codes and regulations" are excluded. Your flue, clearances and fuel storage have to satisfy the local authority having jurisdiction, and the manual governs.
• Consumables are excluded by name: filters, seals, gaskets, air compressor vanes, batteries, insulation and heater cabinets, along with repairs made using parts that are not genuine or Lanair-approved.
• Also excluded: equipment installed outside the continental U.S. or Canada, units moved from the original installation site, and units sold to someone other than the original buyer.
• Service runs through a Return Authorization (RA) number, after over-the-phone diagnosis with the manufacturer's technical support group.

Prices are as listed on each model page at the time of writing; check the model page before quoting. XT-75 weight is the hanging weight from its spec table; LS weights are those published on each listing. LS cabinet figures are the three unlabeled dimensions the listings publish.

Frequently asked questions

What can these heaters actually burn?

Every spec table names the same three approved fuels: #2 fuel oil (diesel), used crankcase oil and used automatic transmission fluid (ATF); the XT-75 tables add that the crankcase oil may be conventional or synthetic. Nothing else is listed as approved, and the warranty excludes damage from misuse - treat the manual's fuel section as the limit.

How do I size the heater for my shop?

The only square-foot rating published here is on the XT-75: up to 1,700 sq. ft. at up to 75,000 BTU/h. The LS listings publish BTU/h and GPH but no square-foot figure. Send us your bay dimensions, ceiling height and location and we will work it against the model spec sheets rather than guessing from a chart.

Do I need the Standard Thru-the-Roof Package or just the heater?

Heater-only if you are adding to an existing tank and chimney setup - that is exactly how the listings describe those SKUs. They also state that most installations are best served by the complete Standard Thru-the-Roof Package. The package if you are starting from nothing - it adds the 250-gallon tank with mount and plumbing plus a thru-the-roof chimney kit. The LS-225, LS-225D, LS-300 and LS-300D packages list that flue part as an LS 8IN Chimney Roof Kit; the LS-150 package does not publish its diameter.

My ceiling is higher than 14 ft. Does the package still work?

All five LS packages state that the package is designed for ceilings up to 14 ft. and that you may need to add additional flue. The LS-225, LS-225D, LS-300 and LS-300D packages add: "For taller ceilings, contact our team for the right chimney configuration." Tell us the height to the underside of the deck and we will quote the flue.

What is the warranty, and what do I have to do to keep it?

One year from the Effective Date, and the buyer must register the unit - no claim is examined until it is registered. Install to the manual, UL and NFPA guidelines and local code, use genuine or approved parts, keep the serial number intact, and keep the unit at its original installation site. Consumables are not covered.

Will I be charged sales tax?

The XT-75 listings carry this note from the manufacturer: Lanair collects sales tax in every state except Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware and Alaska. Confirm the total on your quote before ordering.
