The Super series: quick-change, pinless tooling

Four packages carry the Super designation: the 62898 Super 110, the 62140 Super 120, the 62141 Super 120-7 and the 62213 Super 150. Their bending tooling runs in the 60000, 61000 and 62000 series: radius dies such as 60221 and 60246, half shoes 61014 through 61019, back shoes 61000 through 61005 (plus 63000 for 3 in. in the Super 110), swage assemblies 61229 through 61241 and collets 61423 through 61430, alongside the 555 and 556 ball joints and the 853 flaring tool.

Huth-Ben Pearson describes this tooling as designed for maximum speed and versatility, and states plainly that you will not find any bolts, pins or pusher blocks in it. The parts lists agree: no Super package includes die pins. They ship with the 61841 O-Ring Kit instead.

The numbered die package tooling

The other eight packages are identified by a bare number: 010, 011, 013-NC, 016, 023, 028, 074 and 075. Their parts run in a different series entirely, with radius dies numbered by radius and size (3112 is a 3 in. radius die for 1-1/2 in. tube, 5530 a 5 in. radius die for 3 in. tube), plus back shoes such as 1112, 1200 and 1350, half shoes such as 1038 and 1352, three-quarter shoes, collet sets such as 1712, 1720 and 1730, segment sets 472 through 476 and arbors 572, 573 and 574. The 016 metric package uses its own numbering again.

Six of the eight state a die-pin count: 19 in the 023, 25 in the 010, 30 in the 028, 35 in the 013-NC, 36 in the 011 and 40 in the 016. The 074 and the 075 list none -- neither is a bending package. Huth describes them as combining the tooling you reach for most often with the accessories needed to get the most from the bender. The two families share only three part numbers -- female ball joints 555 and 556 and the 853 flaring/flanging tool. Every bending and end-forming part is exclusive to its family: no Super radius die, half shoe, back shoe, collet or swage assembly appears in a numbered package, and no numbered-series equivalent appears in a Super. Match the bending tooling to the bender you own.

Tube sizes and bend radii each package covers

Every inch-size bending package here offers radius dies in some combination of 3 in., 4 in. and 5 in. radius, as the listings label them; the 023 is the exception with 4 in. and 5 in. only, and the BendPak 300-1 supplies a single 5 in. die. The 074 and the 075 carry no radius dies at all. Bending sizes run from 1-1/2 in. up to 3 in. across the inch packages, and 40 mm to 60 mm on the metric one; separately, the 074 expands up to 6 in. ID. Two patterns are worth knowing:

• The Super 110 reaches 3 in. but the Super 150 does not. The 62898 Super 110 carries only 8 radius dies, yet one is the 62999 (5 in. radius, 3 in. tube), backed by the 63000 3 in. back shoes and the 61550 expander segment for 2-5/8 in. to 3 in. The 62213 Super 150 carries 15 radius dies, the most of any Super package, but they stop at 2-1/2 in. More dies does not mean bigger pipe.
• The Super 150 buys radius choice, not diameter. It is the only Super with three radii on 1-7/8 in. tube (60230, 60231, 60232) and on 2-1/4 in. tube (60240, 60241, 60242), and the only one with the 62995 45-degree flare segment for 1-1/2 in. to 2-1/2 in. The three radii on 2 in. tube (60235, 60236, 60237) are also in the Super 120 and the Super 120-7.

Among the numbered packages, the 011, 023 and 028 all include the 5530 radius die and the 1350 back shoes for 3 in., but only the 013-NC adds the 1352 half shoe, the 1730 collet set and the 130 swage die in that size. It is the only numbered package that can both bend and end-form 3 in. pipe.

The difference between the Super 120 and the Super 120-7

These two look nearly identical on a shelf. The parts lists show the 62140 Super 120 carries a full 1-7/8 in. line the 62141 Super 120-7 does not: radius die 60231, half shoe 61016, swage assembly 61235, back shoes 61002 and collet 61427. Strip those five out of the Super 120 and you have the Super 120-7. If your shop sees 1-7/8 in. pipe, choose the 120.

The metric option and the two specialty kits

The 016 Die Package Tooling is the only metric package here: 20 radius dies from 40 mm to 60 mm across 3 in., 4 in. and 5 in. radii, plus seven-size sets of collets, back shoes, half shoes, three-quarter shoes and swage dies over the same span, and reducing dies 760 (50 to 45 mm), 761 (55 to 50 mm) and 762 (65 to 60 mm). Note the back shoe ladder runs 40, 42, 45, 48, 49, 54 and 60 mm, where the other four sets carry a 50 mm size. It is also the only package with the 984 Pipe End Shaper and the 91176 Ready Rak II.

Two packages are not general-purpose sets at all. The 074 contains no bending dies: it is arbors 572, 573 and 574 plus ten expanding segment sets covering 1-1/2 in. through 6 in. inside diameter, for use with the 1674 expander only. The 075 is the segment kit for the 574 arbor; its listing carries no parts table, so ask us for the contents before ordering.

BendPak 300-1 Deluxe, for BendPak benders

The one non-Huth package here is the BendPak 300-1 Deluxe 3 in. Die Package, SKU BP-5105570. BendPak states that this package gives its pipe benders the ability to bend 3 in. OD tubing. The listing does not name a bender model, so send us yours before ordering. The set is six pieces: two BS-300 3 in. back shoes, one 5R-300 5 in. radius bending die, one SS-300 segment expander, one HAC-300 hinged adapter collar and one STED-300 solid expander die. It is precision machined from solid steel using BendPak's step-cut process, which the listing says helps contain larger tubing through the bend for a more uniform result, and it also supports expanding and flaring.

Shipping weight is 76 lbs. in a 13 in. x 13 in. x 4 in. carton (330 mm x 330 mm x 102 mm). The listing carries a California Proposition 65 warning, notes that BendPak charges tax to California, and states that unloading the freight is the buyer's responsibility.

What else you need before the tooling is useful

These are passive tooling sets, so what you need to check before ordering is compatibility, not shop services.

• Retainer 41041. In the 010, 011, 013-NC and 028, every 5 in. radius die is footnoted "Requires 41041 retainer," and the retainer is not listed as included. The 023 lists 5 in. dies 5412 and 5530 without that footnote, so confirm it for that package.
• Program Card System 980 and Rotation Dial 996. The 013-NC is a tool package less card program and states both parts are sold separately. The 011 includes the 980 in electronic format plus the 996; the 016 includes the 996.
• An expander for the 074, which is stated to be for use with the 1674 expander only and is not a standalone bending kit.
• The 574 arbor for the 075, which is the segment kit for that arbor.
• Discontinued small parts. The 011 and 013-NC both mark 97091 (ruler) and 97092 (Huth marking pen) as no longer available.
• Storage. Only the 016 lists a rack, the 91176 Ready Rak II.

Superseded part numbers and certifications

Working from an older Huth or Ben Pearson parts sheet, four supersessions in these listings will save you a wrong order: 555 supersedes 60780, 556 supersedes 60779, 853 supersedes 617049, and 62995 supersedes both 61542 and 61778.

None of the 13 listings publishes a certification mark such as ALI, ETL or ASME. The only regulatory notice here is the California Proposition 65 warning on the BendPak 300-1 Deluxe.

Comparison of the 13 die packages

Spec sheet points to confirm before you order

Where the listings disagree with themselves, better to say so than average it out.

• Male ball joint tool numbering. On the 013-NC and the 028, the ball joint table lists 550 as 1-3/4 in. male, 552 as 2 in., 553 as 2-1/4 in. and 554 as 2-1/2 in., while the swage die footnotes tell you to use 550 for a 2 in. ID, 552 for 2-1/4 in. and 553 for 2-1/2 in. The 028 carries a fourth note, 554 for a 2-3/4 in. ID, that the 013-NC does not print. The two listings agree on the three notes they share, so order by the ID you are forming and confirm the part number with us.
• Domer dies 557 and 558. The 013-NC lists 557 as covering 1-3/4 in. to 2-1/2 in. and 558 as 2-1/2 in. to 2-3/4 in.; the 028 lists them as a flat 2-1/2 in. and 2-3/4 in. Confirm the range with us before ordering.
• Metric radius die 4048. On the 016 it shows a 3 in. radius while every other 4000-series die in the same table shows 4 in.
• Metric back shoe 1349. On the 016, the back shoe table lists 1349 at 49 mm where the collet (1705), half shoe (1450), three-quarter shoe (1550) and swage die (149) for the same station are all listed at 50 mm. Confirm the size with us if you run 50 mm tube.
• Flaring tool 853. The 010, 011, 013-NC, 028 and all four Super packages describe it as covering 1-1/2 in. to 3-1/2 in. The 016 lists it as 1-1/2 in. only.
• BendPak shipping weight. The listing states 76 lbs. (38 kg); 76 lbs. converts to about 34.5 kg. Use the pound figure for freight.
• BendPak naming. The product is titled 300-1 Deluxe and its description headline reads 300-1 Large. SKU BP-5105570 identifies it.

Frequently asked questions

Which die package fits my bender?

Three listings name their host equipment: the 074 is for use with the 1674 expander only, the 075 is the segment kit for the 574 arbor, and the BendPak 300-1 Deluxe is made for BendPak pipe benders. Note that neither the 1674 nor the 574 is a bender: the 1674 is an expander and the 574 is an arbor. The Huth packages are identified by package number, not by bender model. Send us the make, model and serial number of your bender and we will confirm the correct package before anything ships.

Which package do I need to bend 3 in. pipe?

For bending alone: the Super 110 (62898), the 011, the 013-NC, the 023 and the 028 all include a 5 in. radius die for 3 in. tube, and the BendPak 300-1 Deluxe adds 3 in. capability to a BendPak bender. For bending and end-forming 3 in., only the 013-NC also carries the 3 in. half shoe 1352, collet set 1730 and swage die 130.

Do these packages include everything I need?

Not always. Every 5 in. radius die in the 010, 011, 013-NC and 028 is footnoted as requiring the 41041 retainer, which is not listed as included. The 013-NC is sold without the Program Card System 980 and Rotation Dial 996. Ask us for a line-by-line confirmation on the package you are considering.

Is there a metric option?

One. The 016 Die Package Tooling covers 40 mm to 60 mm with 20 radius dies and seven-size sets of collets, back shoes, half shoes, three-quarter shoes and swage dies, plus reducing dies from 50 mm to 45 mm, 55 mm to 50 mm and 65 mm to 60 mm.
