Spring Compressors

Spring Compressors

A strut spring compressor is a dedicated machine built for one of the most energetic jobs in a service bay: holding a coil spring under compression while a strut assembly is taken apart, re-valved, or rebuilt with a new cartridge and mount. JMC Automotive Equipment carries six items in this category from two manufacturers, Branick and Quality Stainless Products (QSP). Two of them are complete machines, the Branick 7600 Strut Spring Compressor and the QSP MSC-1000 Mechanical Strut Compressor (wall mounted). The other four are mounting and support accessories that let you set those two machines up the way your floor plan allows: the Branick 761 bench mount, the Branick 764 portable cart, the QSP MSC-1000-030 support platform, and the QSP MSC-1000-040 floor mount kit. Everything here is new equipment sold outright, and every accessory is a separate item from the machine it fits.

Both machines in this category are mechanical screw machines rather than hand tools. QSP states that on the MSC-1000 the spring is compressed by turning the lead screw, and Branick lists a heavy duty acme thread and all steel construction on the 7600. In both cases the compression load is carried by the machine and driven by a screw, not by hand-tightened clamps. That is the practical difference for a shop that pulls struts every week rather than once a month.

▸  Read the full Spring Compressors buying guide — types, capacity, power and space, comparison table and FAQs

The two machines hold the spring in different ways. The 7600 uses multi-position upper spring hooks that can be rearranged to fit factory coil spring configurations. The MSC-1000 uses a 4-point spring contact system whose four clamps adjust individually, which QSP states assures even pressure distribution during compression for safety.

The two machines, and how they differ

The choice in this category is not really a long spec-sheet comparison, because the two compressors are built around different geometry and different mounting assumptions.

Branick 7600 -- hook-style, versatile mounting

The 7600 (SKU 00-0138) uses multi-position upper spring hooks that can be rearranged to fit factory coil spring configurations. Branick's own description states that it handles the heaviest coil-over shocks on light trucks and SUVs without needing additional adapters, and that its longer compression stroke covers long-strut applications; the product page calls out the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk by name as one of them. It has longer handles for extra torque, an integrated structural ring guard, a heavy-duty acme thread, and all-steel construction. Its listed strengths are flexibility and reach: whether a spring is long, short, narrow, or angled, the hooks can be moved to suit it.

QSP MSC-1000 -- four-point clamping, wall mounted

The MSC-1000 (SKU QSP-MSC-1000, MPN MSC-1000) takes a different approach. It has a center-located shaft, and the spring is compressed by turning the lead screw on that center axis. Instead of hooks, it uses a 4-point spring contact system, which QSP states assures even pressure distribution during compression for safety. All four clamps adjust individually, so the contact points can be set to the specific spring rather than the spring having to suit a fixed pair of hooks. A safety cage is included as standard, and the machine is made in the USA. QSP's page also lists one set of adaptors for loosely wound coils.

The MSC-1000 ships configured for wall mounting -- wall mount is the standard configuration -- and can optionally be floor mounted using the MSC-1000-040 floor mount kit. That single fact drives most of the decision between these two machines: if you want the compressor off the floor and permanently positioned at working height, the MSC-1000 is the machine designed for it.

Capacity and spring size: what the spec sheets actually state

Only one of the two machines publishes numeric compression limits, and it is important not to blur them together.

The Branick 7600 is rated for a maximum spring compression capacity of up to 3,000 lbs (1361 kg), and it accepts spring diameters from 3.5 in. to 11.5 in. (9 to 29 cm). That diameter window is the spec most buyers should check first. It is what tells you whether the narrow, tightly wound springs on a compact car and the fat springs on a half-ton truck can both be run on the same machine. A spring outside that 3.5 to 11.5 in. range is outside the machine, no matter what it weighs.

The QSP MSC-1000 does not publish a numeric compression capacity or a spring diameter range on its product page. QSP describes its working range in words instead: it handles the smallest and heaviest coil-over shocks on cars, light trucks, and SUVs. If you need a hard number for a specific spring -- and for an unusual application you should -- request the MSC-1000 operating instructions, which are linked from the product page, or call before ordering.

Mounting, shop space, and what you need to install one

The MSC-1000 is wall mounted as standard. Branick lists versatile mounting options for the 7600 and offers two of them as separate items, the 761 bench mount and the 764 portable cart; confirm with us how you intend to install the 7600 before you order, so we can tell you whether you need either one.

For the Branick 7600

  • Branick 761 Bench Mount (SKU 05-0125, 14 lbs shipping weight): mounts the 7600 to a workbench. The right choice if you have a solid bench with clear access on the working side and you want the compressor to live in one spot.
  • Branick 764 Portable Cart (SKU 00-0137, 56 lbs, 40 x 28 x 8 in.): gives the 7600 full mobility plus a sturdy stand. The right choice for a shop that wants to roll the compressor to the bay where the struts came off, or to share one machine between technicians.

Both the 761 and the 764 are listed as being for use with the 7600, and each is a separate item with its own part number -- neither is included with the compressor.

For the QSP MSC-1000

  • QSP MSC-1000-040 Floor Mount Kit: an accessory for use with the MSC-1000, for shops that would rather stand the machine on the floor than fasten it to a wall.
  • QSP MSC-1000-030 Support Platform: holds the loose strut so the technician has both hands free. QSP frames this as a safety and speed accessory, and it is the one most worth considering, because QSP lists it as securing the loose strut and freeing up both hands for safety and speed.

The images on the MSC-1000 product page show it fitted with both the support platform and the floor mount kit; both are sold separately.

Space, structure, and power

Two practical planning points come out of the listed data. First, QSP lists a shipping weight of 150 lbs for the MSC-1000. QSP's page lists a shipping weight of 150 lbs, but our own store record for this item is 195 lbs, so ask us to confirm the actual freight weight before you quote it. No net mounted weight is published. QSP does not state a wall-load, fastener, or backing requirement on the product page either; review the MSC-1000 operating instructions, linked from that page, before you pick a mounting location.

Second, the 7600's published figure of 18.5 x 20 x 43.63 in. (47 x 51 x 111 cm) is its packaged dimensional data, not its installed footprint, and its listed shipping weight is 100 lbs. Use the packaged figure for receiving and storage planning, and the manual for bench or cart clearances.

Neither machine is listed with an electrical supply requirement, and neither is listed with an air pressure or CFM requirement. Both are mechanically driven. The MSC-1000's center screw can be turned with a ratchet handle or an impact tool, and QSP notes you can use your impact gun on the heavy-duty acme screw -- so shop air is one option among several rather than a requirement. QSP lists a ratchet handle or an impact tool. Branick lists longer handles for extra torque on the 7600 and does not state whether an impact tool can be used on it; if that matters to you, ask us and we will check the manual for your model. If you need a specific torque, duty-cycle, or anchoring figure for either machine, that level of detail is in the model's manual rather than on the category page.

Safety features that are actually declared

A compressed coil spring stores a large amount of energy, so it is worth being precise about what each machine states and what it does not.

The 7600 lists an integrated structural ring guard and all-steel construction. The MSC-1000 includes a safety cage as standard, and its 4-point spring contact system is described by QSP as assuring even pressure distribution during compression for safety.

Branick publishes a commercial warranty on the 7600, the 761, and the 764: one year from the date of shipment against defective materials or workmanship, to the original user-owner. QSP does not publish warranty terms on the MSC-1000 pages; ask us for them before you order.

Neither product page in this category declares a third-party certification such as ALI, ASME, or ETL, and we are not going to imply one that the manufacturer has not published. If a third-party certification exists for either model, it is not published anywhere we could verify it. If your shop or insurer requires documentation, call 800-562-4791 before you order and we will tell you what the manufacturer provides.

Choosing between them

Start with where the machine will live. If you have wall space at working height in a strut bay and you want the floor kept clear, the QSP MSC-1000 is purpose-built for that installation, and QSP lists the MSC-1000-040 floor mount kit as the accessory for a floor installation. Call us before ordering if you want to confirm the mounting configuration for your bay. If the machine has to move between bays, or has to sit on an existing bench, the Branick 7600 with the 764 cart or the 761 bench mount is the more flexible package.

Then check the springs you actually service. The 7600 gives you a published window -- 3.5 to 11.5 in. diameter, up to 3,000 lbs -- which is the easier spec to verify against your own fleet before you buy. Branick describes the 7600 for the heaviest coil-over shocks on light trucks and SUVs. QSP describes the MSC-1000 for the smallest and heaviest coil-over shocks on cars, light trucks and SUVs. If passenger cars are most of your work, the QSP page is the one that states that duty in writing; check the 7600's published 3.5 to 11.5 in. diameter window against your own springs.

Finally, consider how the spring is held. The 7600's multi-position hooks can be rearranged for long, short, narrow, or angled springs. The MSC-1000's four individually adjusting clamps contact the spring at four points for even pressure. Have the technicians who will run it daily look at both before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

What size springs will the Branick 7600 handle?

Branick lists a minimum and maximum spring diameter of 3.5 in. to 11.5 in. (9 to 29 cm) and a maximum spring compression capacity of up to 3,000 lbs (1361 kg). Check your springs against the diameter range first, since that is the harder limit to work around.

Does the QSP MSC-1000 have to be mounted on a wall?

Wall mount is the standard configuration, but QSP states it can be wall or optionally floor mounted. The MSC-1000-040 floor mount kit is the accessory that makes the floor installation possible, and it is sold separately.

Do the accessories come with the compressors?

No. Each of the four is a separate item with its own part number: the Branick 761 bench mount and 764 portable cart for the 7600, and the QSP MSC-1000-030 support platform and MSC-1000-040 floor mount kit for the MSC-1000. Branick lists the 764 under Optional Accessories (Sold Separately), and QSP lists both of its accessories the same way. The photography on both machine pages shows the machines fitted with optional accessories that are not part of the base machine.

Do I need shop air to run these?

Not necessarily. Both machines are mechanical. QSP states the MSC-1000's center screw can be turned with a ratchet handle or an impact tool, so shop air is one option rather than a requirement, and neither machine's page lists an air pressure, CFM, or electrical requirement.

Will the Branick 7600 need extra adapters for truck and SUV springs?

Branick states the 7600 does not require adaptors and handles the heaviest coil-over shocks on light trucks and SUVs without additional adapters, using its multi-position upper hooks to suit different factory spring configurations. For QSP's machine, the page lists one set of adaptors for loosely wound coils.

Is documentation available before I buy?

Yes. The Branick 7600, 761, and 764 each link a manual and a flyer, and the QSP MSC-1000 links its operating instructions, all from their product pages. Availability on all six items in this category is shown as call for details, so contact us at 800-562-4791 to confirm current stock, freight, and the right configuration for your bay before you place the order.
