New vs. Used Automotive Equipment: Why New Is the Smarter Buy
Looking for used automotive equipment? You're trying to equip your shop without overpaying — that's the right instinct. Here's an honest look at both options, from a distributor that sells new.
Do we ever have used or refurbished equipment?
Sometimes, yes. Used and refurbished units come through our warehouse from time to time, but it's occasional — we don't keep a standing used inventory, and we can't promise a specific model will be there. If used is what you're after, call (800) 562-4791 and ask what's on the floor right now. If we don't have it, we'll show you the new equivalent and what financing does to the monthly number.
Buying used — from anyone? Check these four things first.
- Service history. Ask for maintenance records. A lift with no documented history is an unknown, and it's holding tons over your techs.
- Parts availability. Discontinued models get expensive fast when a cylinder or control box fails. Confirm parts are still made before you commit.
- Certification paperwork. Ask whether the model was certified when new and whether that documentation still exists — your insurer may ask for it.
- Structural wear. Fatigue cracks, worn cables and past repairs don't always show up in photos.
Why most of our customers end up buying new
- Full manufacturer warranty. New car lifts, tire changers and wheel balancers ship with the factory warranty — JMC is an authorized distributor for every brand we carry.
- No history to investigate. New equipment has no prior service life, no undocumented repairs and no hidden wear. Where a model carries ALI certification, that documentation comes with it straight from the manufacturer — ask us which models are ALI certified.
- Financing makes new affordable. Terms from 12 to 60 months mean a new unit can cost less per month than you'd expect.
- Parts and support. Current models, parts on the shelf, and a team that helps you spec the right setup — from a single car lift to a full bay.
