TL vs. TLX: the only decision that really matters

QuickJack splits this category two ways. The first split is TL vs. TLX, and it is not about strength - a 6000TL and a 6000TLX both lift 6,000 lb. The difference is reach: how far apart the lift pads can be spread to meet the vehicle's factory jack points.

• TL (standard length) - frame length 70.5 in. on the 6000TL and 70.75 in. on the 8000TL. Lift point spread adjusts from 37 in. minimum to 60 in. maximum (the 6000TL lists 60.18 in.).
• TLX (extended length) - frame length 76 in. on both the 6000TLX and 8000TLX. Lift point spread adjusts from 43 in. minimum to 66 in. maximum.

The TLX gains 6 in. of maximum reach, but the QuickJack listings are blunt about the trade-off: because the frames were stretched, the minimum spread went up by 6 in. as well. The 8000TLX listing states plainly that "smaller vehicles may not fit with the 8000TLX." A very short-wheelbase car that a 37 in. minimum TL handles comfortably may simply be too short for a 43 in. minimum TLX. The 6000TLX listing repeats the point about super-short-wheelbase cars and tells the buyer to measure the wheelbase, re-measure, and measure again before ordering.

The practical rule from the fichas: measure the distance between your vehicle's manufacturer-recommended lift points first, then pick the frame whose min-to-max window contains that number. If your fleet is mixed and one vehicle sits at 62 in. or 64 in., the TL frames cannot reach it and the TLX is the required choice. If everything you service is compact, the TL is the better fit.

6000 series vs. 8000 series

The second split is capacity, and it brings a few dimensional changes with it.

• 6000TL / 6000TLX - 6,000 lb. capacity, 24 in. lifting height with stacked blocks, 2.75 in. lowered height, 11 in. frame width, 79 lb. and 81 lb. listed frame weight respectively.
• 8000TL / 8000TLX - 8,000 lb. capacity, 24.5 in. lifting height with stacked blocks, 3.5 in. lowered height, 12.5 in. frame width, 100 lb. and 103 lb. listed frame weight respectively.

Moving up to the 8000 series buys you 2,000 lb. of capacity and half an inch of extra working height, and costs you 0.75 in. of lowered height and 1.5 in. of frame width. That lowered height matters more than it sounds: 2.75 in. on a 6000 series frame slides under lower ground-clearance cars than the 3.5 in. frame of an 8000 series lift. The 8000TL listing describes itself as the portable truck lift capable of getting truck and SUV tires completely off the ground, and it credits reinforced upper frame rails for handling passenger cars, light-duty trucks, and SUVs.

The 8000TLX is the top of the range in this category: 8,000 lb. capacity combined with the 76 in. extended frame and 66 in. maximum lift point spread, aimed at long-wheelbase trucks and SUVs. Its listing notes it reaches maximum rise in approximately 30 seconds; the 6000TLX listing quotes the same 30-second rise. The 6000TL and 8000TL listings do not state a rise time - check the model brochure if cycle time is a purchasing factor for you.

What you need to install and run one

Floor and anchoring. The 8000TLX listing states that no bolts are required and that, as long as the ground is level, the assembly can be taken outdoors for use on dirt, gravel, grass, asphalt, or concrete. It describes the built-in urethane wheels as letting the frames be rolled around indoors or outdoors. No listing in this category specifies a minimum concrete thickness or PSI. The 8000TLX is the only one of the four lifts whose listing addresses anchoring at all: the 6000TL, 6000TLX, and 8000TL listings say nothing about bolts, anchors, or concrete, so confirm against the model manual rather than assuming the same.

Ceiling. Maximum lifting height in this category is 24.5 in., and these lifts carry no overhead beam or superstructure. Remember the vehicle sits on top of that rise, so measure your own headroom - the listings do not state a required ceiling height.

Electrical. All four packaged listings name the lift as a 110V unit in the product title and in the package contents line (6000TL-110V, 6000TLX-110V, 8000TL-110V, 8000TLX-110V); the SKUs themselves are QJ-5175634, QJ-5175638, QJ-5176009 and QJ-5176113. The 8000TLX listing adds that "no special wiring is ever necessary." The individual lift listings do not print a voltage line in their specification tables, so if you are ordering a standalone frame set and need to confirm the power unit voltage for your bay, confirm it against that model's spec sheet before ordering.

Air supply. None of the eight listings in this category states a compressed air requirement, and the power unit is described as electric/hydraulic. The listings do not rule an air source in or out, so confirm it in the model manual before you plan the bay - other QuickJack models do call for one.

Storage. Frames stow flat at 2.75 in. or 3.5 in. depending on series, and the wall hanger sets included in all four packages are described as mounting directly into a wall stud and holding all QuickJack frames.

Safety locks and the hydraulic system

Every one of the four lifts in this category is described with dual-position automatic safety locks on each frame. The locks engage automatically as the frames rise, at both a mid-rise and a full-rise position, and are released by flipping the lock bar for a controlled descent. The 8000TL listing adds that no pin setting or guesswork is required to release the locks; the other three listings describe the same flip-the-lock-bar release without that wording.

On the hydraulic side, the 6000TLX, 8000TL, and 8000TLX all specify a reengineered power unit with a pressure-compensated flow divider and independent shut-off solenoids, so both frames rise and lower in sync and stay balanced if you stop mid-cycle. The 6000TL listing specifies the pressure-compensated flow divider but does not mention the independent shut-off solenoids - if that feature is a requirement for you, confirm it on the 6000TL spec sheet rather than assuming parity with the other three.

The 6000TLX, 8000TL and 8000TLX listings state that the hydraulic system arrives preassembled from the factory for a faster setup; the 8000TL adds "no complex connections" and the 6000TLX "just connect and start lifting." The 6000TL page repeats the "Factory preassembled hydraulics" heading, but the text beneath it is a duplicate of the safety-locks description, not an actual description of the hydraulics. Check the model manual for the fluid and hose connections required at setup.

Where the listings disagree

A few specification conflicts exist inside these product pages. In each case the product name and the specification table are the reliable source, and the marketing paragraph is not:

• 6000TL lowered height and length. The opening paragraph says 3 in. lowered height and 70 in. overall length. The specification table says 2.75 in. and 70.5 in. Use the table.
• 6000TL maximum reach. The 6000TLX page claims the 6000TL has a "limiting lift point reach of 66 in." The 6000TL's own specification table lists a 60.18 in. maximum spread. Use 60.18 in.
• 8000TL lifting height. One feature bullet says 24.25 in.; the opening paragraph and the specification table both say 24.5 in. Use 24.5 in.
• 8000TL metric capacity. The table prints "8,000 lbs. (3,175 kg)", while the 8000TLX prints "8,000 lbs. (3,629 kg)". The pound figure is consistent across the name, title, and both tables; the 8000TL metric conversion is the error.

Model comparison

Lifting heights above are the figures the specification tables give for stacked blocks. Specifications for the four package rows are taken from the underlying lift listing; the package pages themselves do not publish a specification table. Frame weight is the figure printed on that lift's page, not the shipped weight of the bundle - the packages also include the wall hangers and either the pinch-weld blocks or the SUV adapter set.

Packages and QuickJack accessories

Four of the eight listings are bundles, and the accessory content differs by series:

• 6000TL-110V and 6000TLX-110V packages - the lift plus one Wall Hanger Set and one Urethane Pinch-Weld Block Set. The blocks (QJ-5300013) are a set of four urethane rubber blocks with a pinch-weld profile, using a harder rubber for extra support on pinch-weld frame vehicles, and the listing states they fit all QuickJack frame assemblies.
• 8000TL-110V and 8000TLX-110V packages - the lift plus one Wall Hanger Set and one SUV and Light Truck Adapter Set. That adapter set is described as a four-piece set of stackable adapters that mount inside the lifting block trays to increase service capability.

The Wall Hanger Set (QJ-5210199) is common to all four packages: a set of two black powder-coated wall mounts, described as the only official hangers designed and engineered by QuickJack, guaranteed to hold all QuickJack frames when mounted directly into a wall stud.

Beyond what ships in the boxes, each lift listing names the accessory families it is compatible with, and the four lists are not identical. The 8000TL and 8000TLX listings name SUV/truck adapters, pinch-weld blocks and frame extensions. The 6000TLX names SUV adapters, pinch-weld blocks and motorcycle/ATV kits. The 6000TL names frame extensions, adapters and motorcycle/ATV kits. Confirm the exact part against the model page before ordering an accessory. Note that compatibility is not inclusion - the 8000TL listing, for example, quotes its 24.5 in. lifting height with the optional Light Truck and SUV Adapters, which are sold separately unless you buy the 8000TL-110V package.

Certifications

None of the eight listings in this category states an ALI, ANSI, ETL, ASME, CE or OSHA certification. If a certification mark is required by your insurer, your landlord, or your jurisdiction, request the brochure and manual for the specific model before ordering rather than assuming coverage. The four individual lift listings link a brochure and a manual; the four package listings link back to the component product pages instead. Note that several of those PDF links currently point to a different QuickJack model, so confirm the SKU on the cover of the document before you rely on it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether I need a TL or a TLX?

Measure the distance between the manufacturer-recommended lift points on the vehicles you service. TL frames cover a 37 in. to 60 in. spread; TLX frames cover 43 in. to 66 in. If your longest vehicle sits above 60 in., you need a TLX. If your shortest vehicle sits below 43 in., a TLX will not fit it and you need a TL. The 6000TLX listing is explicit that its own frames are probably too long for super-short-wheelbase vehicles.

Do I need to bolt these to the floor or pour new concrete?

The 8000TLX listing states that no bolts are required and no special wiring is ever necessary, and that the assembly can be used on dirt, gravel, grass, asphalt, or concrete as long as the ground is level. That is the core reason buyers choose a portable hydraulic car lift over a two-post. The other three listings do not address anchoring; check the manual for your model.

Can these lift a truck or SUV, or only cars?

Both 8000 series models are rated at 8,000 lb. and are described for passenger cars, light-duty trucks, and SUVs; the 8000TL listing states it can get truck and SUV tires completely off the ground. For long-wheelbase trucks and SUVs, the 8000TLX adds the 66 in. maximum lift point spread. Confirm your vehicle's curb weight is within the 6,000 lb. or 8,000 lb. rating and that its lift points fall inside the frame's spread window.

What is the difference between a portable car lift and a car jack?

A jack raises one corner or one axle and requires jack stands to work under the vehicle. These portable lifts raise the whole vehicle on two frames to a 24 in. or 24.5 in. working height, engage dual-position automatic safety locks at mid-rise and full-rise, and are operated by a pendant control with one hand. They put all four wheels off the ground at once.

Is shipping included, and what happens when the truck arrives?

All eight listings in this category are flagged for free shipping. Seven of the eight listings carry the same two conditions verbatim: it is the buyer's responsibility to unload the freight at their location, and Bendpak charges sales tax in California. The 8000TL-110V package page (QJ-5176009) does not print them - assume the same terms apply and confirm with us before ordering. Which model do you recommend for a home garage with a low ceiling?

Any of the four. Maximum lift height in this category is 24.5 in., so the lift itself adds no overhead structure; measure your ceiling against the vehicle height plus 24.5 in. Choose on lift point spread first, then on capacity. If your ground clearance is tight, the 6000 series frames sit 0.75 in. lower at 2.75 in. collapsed versus 3.5 in. for the 8000 series, which makes them easier to slide under low cars. All four stow flat and roll on built-in urethane wheels.

Do these work with electric vehicles?

The 6000TLX listing notes that its 66 in. reach covers virtually every consumer vehicle type "with the exception of certain electric vehicles," for which QuickJack offers the 6000ELX.
