Automotive Air Conditioning Tools: Everything You Need to Know

Who doesn’t want a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere inside their car? Apart from keeping the interiors clean, it’s also important to look after the vehicle’s air conditioning system to keep passengers cool.

Considering climate change and the increased demand for air conditioning tools and equipment, the global automotive air conditioning market value is projected to reach $68.18 billion by 2027.

Keep reading for a handy guide to all things related to car air conditioning.

Basics of Air Conditioning Systems

The automotive industry uses several types of air conditioning systems depending on the car model, size, and features. Expansion valve systems and orifice tube systems are the most common systems you’ll find, alongside combinations of the two systems.

The whole system operates to purify the air circulating in the vehicle, regulate the car’s interior temperature, and eliminate excessive humidity. Depending on your vehicle’s air conditioning system, it’s important to learn about its components and how the system works.

Automotive Air Conditioning Components

A car’s AC system components resemble those of home ACs, but are modified to fit inside an engine. The primary components include a compressor, condenser, expansion valve, refrigerant, receiver-dryer, accumulator, filter, orifice tube, and evaporator.

All these components work together in a synchronized way to provide the desired internal temperature of the vehicle. If one of these components malfunctions and is ignored, the whole system crashes.

How Does the AC System Work?

A core component of a car AC system is the compressor, a pump attached to the engine. It compresses and transfers the refrigerant gas to the condenser to reduce the temperature under high pressure.

The expansion valve causes the refrigerant to change from liquid to low-pressure mist and then continues to the evaporator. A blower motor pushes this mist over the evaporator’s cold tubes to create cool air and then sent to the vehicle cabin.

The main function of a receiver-dryer is to convert remaining liquids into vapors before sending them for compression. It’s used in between the compressor and evaporator for protection. Otherwise, if any liquids should flow towards the compressor, they can get damaged.

Servicing Air Conditioning Tools and Equipment

The automotive air conditioning tools and equipment requires regular servicing, just like your car engine. The service should be done at least once every 12 months, ideally before the change of seasons.

Regular servicing improves the system's efficiency and lifespan and detects potential issues before they worsen. This will also improve air quality inside the car by cleaning the system to prevent mold, microbes, and other pollutants.
